Deputy vs Hazzard

Mrs. Henrietta Deputy age 28 last Nov 1880, the wife of David A Deputy .
Sued ex-commissioner of Brooklyn, NY - Wm H Hazzard, a very wealthy man.
Mrs. Deputy's husband is Mr.Hazzard's cousin.
Several years ago M/M Deputy bought Mr.Hazzard's property located at No.188 Schermerhorn Street. Hazzard gave them a mortgage.
On one occasion, the interest was not paid, and Hazzard threatened to foreclose. Mr.Deputy wrote Hazzard and asked for time to pay.
June 1880, Mrs Deputy went to Hazzards to plead with him. She offered to give him back the property if she received the cash payment. Hazzard refused, then told Mrs Deputy that he would break her husband's neck if he could lay hands on him.
Hazzard then seized both Mrs Deputy's arms and shook her violently. He jerked her head around and basically beat her up right there on the spot. Then he carried Mrs Deputy to the door and hurled her with force placing his knee in the hollow of her back to aid him in the effort. Then he tried to kick her in the head as she fell down the stairs. It gets pretty graphic in the description , etc..
And this is how she was injured.

Mrs. Margaret E Goldsmith lives down the street. Says passed the boarding house (Mr.Hazzard's house) on her way to Mr.Talmage's prayer meeting and heard a loud talking and saw a man push a lady out through the door with such force that she went clear to the edge of the step.

Interesting highlights; Mrs Deputy's father, Martin A Combs, was laughed at by defendant's counsel because he said his faith as a Quaker prevented him from interfering with violence to protect his daughter when she was being assailed by Hazzard.
Hazzard is stated as calling Mrs Deputy a "stinking little hussy" and said "you dirty little b --- I will put you out"

Judge Reynolds in the City Court yesterday handed down his decision granting a new trial in the suit of Mrs. Henrietta C. Deputy against William H Hazzard, in which a
verdict for $13,000 was rendered to the plaintiff.

Mar 1881 2nd TRIAL
Mrs. Deputy brought into court on a stretcher by her husband and three young men.
Doctors stuck needles 3/4 of inch into her legs and tickled her feet to prove she had a spinal injury.

Verdict - $8,500 to Mrs Deputy.
There was talk that an appeal will be filed from Mrs Deputy and if the verdict holds , Mr Deputy states, he will sue Hazzard further, for loss of services of his wife.
Did not find any further lawsuits.
